Shopping for Skin Care Products
Here’s an understatement for 2018: shopping for skin care products can be a complex and confusing experience. This is something that Kelley Thornton realized a few years ago when he walked into a department store to browse the men’s grooming section and came out with a BB tinted lotion—“without having any clue,” he says, about what such a product actually does for your skin.
In today’s hyper-connected world, choices abound—sometimes too many, which can be downright overwhelming. This reality inspired Thornton to launch Tiege Hanley as an alternative for men who don’t want to spend hours decoding product names or searching for the right face wash. “I am striving for simplicity in my life and I think a lot of guys are on the same path,” he says. With Tiege Hanley, you get an uncomplicated system—one that revolves around cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing (and doesn’t involve quizzes or sampler kits filled with stuff you don’t need). To start, you just choose from one of three levels, depending on whether you want the basics or more anti-aging muscle.

In a very noisy and crowded skin care market, it’s a way to easily have a routine assembled for you—and shipped to your door regularly, so you don’t have to think about it—which is a game-changer for many. Back in the day, Thornton says, “there was a stigma about guys taking care of themselves—it almost had a negative connotation to it.” Now? “It’s completely changed, and I think most will agree that cultural norms make it perfectly okay for a guy to want to put something on his face or skin.” In fact, Thornton recently saw a friend of his (“a super alpha male and star Oklahoma football player in the ‘80s”) through the window of a spa. “He was getting a manicure and pedicure.”

No doubt, the conversation around “self-care” and grooming among men has evolved. “Guys are learning now what ladies have known forever,” says Thornton. “That taking care of your face is important and products do actually work.” You just need a way to navigate the options, so you can find what works and stick to it. “My skin has never looked better,” says Thornton, who by the way, uses a Level 3 regimen (which does not include a BB tinted lotion). “I wish I would have started 20 years ago.”
