Itchy Face? Why You Might Feel Like Scratching

man rubbing tired eyes

When your face itches, it can be difficult to concentrate. Not only that, but the desire to scratch your face is unbearable and can lead to scarring if you can’t resist the urge. Yes, you could go see a doctor—but that might take days or weeks to work into your busy schedule. In the meantime, here are three things to know:

  1. Dry skin is the most common reason for an itchy face and can be treated with a men’s moisturizer. However, this could also be an underlying symptom of another medical condition.
  2. Fragrances and dyes found in many skin care products could be another reason for scratching. Always read the ingredients list on your skin care products and avoid those with perfumes or colorants that might aggregate your skin.
  3. If none of the common causes for itchy face fit your symptoms, it’s time to see a doctor.

    Dry Skin

Have you ever noticed that your face gets super itchy in the winter? It might be due to dry skin.

Dry skin is one of the most common causes of an itchy face. Unfortunately, changes in the weather are just one of the many possible reasons for the skin to lose its moisture. Dry skin, (also called xeroderma) can be caused by lifestyle changes, over-the-counter skin care products, and genetics. It can also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as hypothyroidism and type 2 diabetes, or skin conditions such as psoriasis.

Until you can see a doctor about the issue, consider ruling out these common culprits of dry skin:

Hard (and Hot) Water. Studies show that the hardness of water can irritate the skin and leave it feeling dry and flaky. Additionally, taking hot showers is also damaging to your skin, especially during the winter.

Fragrances and Dyes. The fragrances and dyes found in many skin care products are often harmful to our skin and could be the cause of dryness. Read the ingredients list of your cosmetic products and consider eliminating them from your skin care regimen if they contain synthetic fragrances and dyes.

Acne Medication. Some acne medications contain ingredients which are irritating to the skin and often dehydrate it. Reduce the frequency by which you use these products or switch to a more gentle acne treatment system.

    Allergies

If your itchy face is accompanied by symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes, allergies are likely the cause. Allergic reactions are caused when the body’s immune system overreacts to substances that don’t pose a threat, such as certain foods and pollens.

During an allergic reaction, the body releases chemicals into the tissues and blood. These chemicals are extremely irritating and cause itching and swelling. Some allergies need a prescription medication to treat, while others can be resolved through over-the-counter (OTC) medications. If OTC antihistamines aren’t helping your itching, it may be time to see an allergist to help minimize your misery.

    Eczema

Dry, red and itchy skin is a symptom of eczema, or dermatitis. This group of skin conditions is often associated with red, scaly patches on the elbows and knees, but it can appear on the neck and face as well.

According to the National Eczema Association, over 30 million Americans have some form of the skin condition. The long-lasting form of eczema (called atopic dermatitis) typically appears during childhood, while contact dermatitis refers to the skin coming into contact with an irritant and/or allergen.

Unfortunately, eczema is not a curable condition. But there is good news—today, you have plenty of options to minimize inflammation and irritation caused by eczema. From OTC treatments to prescribed medications, you can clear up that rash in no time.

    Acne

Acne is incredibly common, affecting nearly 80 percent of people between the ages of 11 and 30. Not only is it a bummer to see every day in the mirror, but it can also be painful and itchy.

Acne occurs when your pores become clogged with oil, dead skin and/or bacteria. In addition to producing some unsightly pimples, clogged pores can also lead to dry and itchy skin.

For many guys with acne, finding the right skin care solution can be challenging. But it doesn’t need to be that way.

At Tiege Hanley, we’ve developed a skin care system for men that’s uncomplicated and a total breeze to stick to. If acne is the source of your itchy face, then we’ve got your handsome mug covered.

    Facial Psoriasis

The visible effect of psoriasis is bad enough, but the itching is possibly even worse. This chronic skin condition is the result of inflammation caused by an overactive immune system.

Psoriasis can cause scaly, itchy patches on the skin. These patches most often appear on the scalp, knees and elbows, but they can appear anywhere on the skin.

Whether mild or severe, itching is a common symptom in most cases. If your itchiness has a slight burning or pain, it might be a mild form of psoriasis. However, an official diagnosis from a doctor is needed to be sure.

Still Not Sure? Talk to Your Doctor.

An itchy face can range from a harmless change in weather to a serious underlying condition. If you aren’t sure of the cause of your itchy face, it never hurts to speak with your doctor.
